Chalkboard Filing Cabinet Organization: Project Saturdays

This Saturday I decided to tackle a project that I’ve been putting of for months: Organizing all of the paperwork shoved in drawers around my house and giving everything a place.

My husband and mother in law are incredibly thrifty, and found a small two drawer filing cabinet at a local estate auction last summer for less than five dollars. While it is still in amazing condition, I really wanted to DIY the cabinet into being more modern and fun for our living space.

My mother in law had this bottle of chalkboard paint laying in her crafting trove, so I was able to borrow it from her. She found it at TJ Maxx for 3.99, but here is the exact same type that I used for 9.99 on Amazon!

Here is what the filing cabinet looked like before I started my painting party. (Anytime Britney Spears and Hanson are playing, anything can be a party, right?) I gave it a really great scrub down with some Krud Kutter cleaner.

Once the filing cabinet was completely dry, I grabbed a foam brush that I had picked up from my craft store for 30 cents, and got to work. The key to working with chalkboard paint is to do a LOT of very thin layers of paint, instead of less coatings of a thicker layer of paint.

I have used some types of chalkboard paint that are really flakey, or chalky looking once they dry. This chalkboard paint was so simple to use, and looked flawless once it was all finished! I painted five coats of the chalkboard paint, letting the coats dry for two hours in between each coat.

I decided to leave the hardware of the drawer pulls, and the lock the same stock silver that they already were. I love the way that the finished product looks with the bright metallic pop!

Here is the finished product in my craft/furniture painting room. I love the way that it turned out!

The next step of the project? To actually sort and organize this:

I made individual files for:

  • Barley (our puppy child)
  • College Transcripts
  • Taxes
    • 2013
    • 2014
    • 2015
  • Voter’s Registration Documents
  • Birth Certificates
  • Social Security Documents
  • Name Change Receipts
  • Student Loan Paperwork (Insert Collective Sigh Here)
  • Marriage License
  • Bar Association Paperwork (For the Husband)
  • Medical Records
  • Dental Paperwork
  • Teaching License
  • Mortgage Documents
  • Home Insurance
  • Auto Insurance
  • Vehicle Records
  • Cell Phone Information
  • Product Warranty Information
  • User Manuals

Check out this perfection:

As more paperwork builds up in my basket, I am sure I will be adding even more files to the already long list. I really enjoy having a place for everything, and everything in it’s place.
